How to get sport on Freeview

If you want to get sport on Freeview, then nowadays it has never been simpler. With more and more television watchers using Freeview, there is a great variety of sports channels and packages out there to keep the most avid sports fan happy.

To get sport on Freeview, you need to know what you want. Do you want a comprehensive, all-encompassing package, or just a simple one channel that can keep you filled in on the main matches? Either can be catered for through Freeview. For example, you can buy just the ESPN UK channel on its own for a small price, a Sky Sports + ESPN bundle for a higher price, or a comprehensive Sky Sports package for a different price. There is also the chance to upgrade to HD if your TV is HD ready.

Once you have thought about what you want, you need to have the gear to access the sport. You need to make sure you have the equipment for your particular bundle, although this often is nothing if you have Freeview capabilities already.

If you are trying to get sport on Freeview without already having a Freeview box, then you need to check to make sure you can receive a digital signal in your area. If you search online you can easily find if it’s possible to get  a Freeview signal in your area. Then it’s a simple matter of buying a box (with a one-off payment and no contract) and adding sport bundles to fulfil all your sporting needs.

Freeview with Sky Sports

Freeview with Sky Sports is fast becoming a popular option that many are buying to keep abreast of the current sports news. There are various price ranges and subscription types, but Ofcom appear to have made a good decision allowing Sky Sports to become available on Freeview.
Freeview with Sky Sports was, of course, not always an option. In June this last year, it was put to Ofcom that Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 should become available through Freeview. This was quite a new and exciting prospect; it would be the first time these channels would become available through an aerial and not via satellite.

When Ofcom made the decision, there were still some kinks to iron out. Around the same time as the announcement, Sky said that it would be taking off its Sky Sports New Channel from Freeview, and putting it back into their own paid subscription bundles. It was replaced with Sky 3+1.

Despite the niggles, the fact that Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 are available, with no contract, via Freeview, has made a lot of sports fans happy. Fans can choose whether to have just Sky Sports 1 or just Sky Sports 2, or can get both of them for a little extra cost. There are also options to get the channels in HD, often for a small extra monthly cost.

Freeview with Sky Sports was controversial when it was first conceived, but now many happy fans have the chance to see the premium sports channels on their Freeview boxes.

How to get ESPN in the UK

‘How to get ESPN’ might seem like a strange bit of advice for people in the UK, as ESPN is widely considered an American based sports channel. In America this is true: the sports shown are American football, basketball, baseball etc. The UK version of ESPN is just as varied, but less American based.

To get ESPN in the UK means, in fact, being able to watch a number of UK-based premier sports fixtures. ESPN UK shows live Barclay Premier Leagues and Scottish Premier League matches. This was after ESPN took over from Setanta Sports, and bought the rights to those matches that Setanta was previously able to show.

The UK ESPN channel was launched on the 3rd August 2009, and was launched both in standard definition and high definition format for customers to choose from.

ESPN, as always, provide distinct variety. Alongside UK football matches, you can also get matches from the top Russian, German, Dutch and Portuguese football clubs. There are also opportunities to watch the Major League soccer tournaments in America, the Australian Football League and NCAA College Football. Outside of the football/soccer sports, you can also get hockey, rugby and basketball.

So, finally, how do you get ESPN in the UK? ESPN UK is available on any of the big satellite networks such as Sky and Virgin, but it is also available from Top Up TV, TalkTalk and Freeview. By going through your television package provider, you can get the best deals on a ESPN UK channel subscription that suits you.
